WIP: unnamed purple & green butterfly bowl

Another one in the late stages:

purple & green bowl

You can’t see it in this photo, but the exterior is a wonderful translucent green wash. The edge on this one is totally organic; I sanded off the sharpness, but left the freeform shape of the paper mache, and I really love the effect.

In the final stages:

The interior has a simple mustard translucent wash that lets the texture of the paper mache show through; the exterior is an avocado green.

Paper, Papier Mache, WIP

Last Saturday, I spent the day running a zillion errands; one of my stops was at Savers, where I found a set of three nesting stainless steel bowls, perfect for use as forms for paper mache. I’m starting with the middle-sized one, which yields a bowl slightly larger than my previous ones; here’s the first bowl drying out on the balcony:

Not terribly exciting to look at, but I’m excited to have some variety in sizes to play with. 🙂

Here’s the Paint & Stitch bowl, decorated and in the progress of being varnished:

The stitching fiber will be black. Not entirely sure how I’ll finish the fiber portion; I didn’t plan the holes carefully enough, so some finagling will be involved in that department. I’m really curious how it will turn out, now!

Here’s the latest WIP:

raw

I haven’t decided yet whether this piece will incorporate beads, or merely fiber, but it will definitely be mixed media. Sort of fun to experiment, and just wing it. 😉

I’m contemplating doing a mixed-media piece, to combine my two favorites — papier mache and lampwork beads. Perhaps this weekend I’ll dig through my collection of beads, and see what I’ve got in a size that complements the current bowl-in-progress…

Admin, General

I’m learning how to integrate all of my online presences into a whole — now when I post a new item to Etsy, I can use their built-in widget to tweet about it, and the tweet will not only show up on Twitter, but also automatically post to the sidebar here on the blog. As my friend Traci would say, cool beans! If I could only get the Facebook widget to properly pick up the tweets as well, I’d be all set (there’s a flaw in the API that lets you post to a FB Page rather than to your personal FB Timeline — they’re working on it, but for the time being, no joy).

♣ About Me

A mild-mannered number cruncher by day, mad crafter by night! Papier mache and lampwork glass beads are my favorite media, but anything that recycles/repurposes existing materials is likely to catch my attention. :-)

Bullet points: one husband, oodles of nieces & nephews, multiple best friends, several thousand books, silence punctuated by laughter, infinite curiosity, procrastination, distraction, a packrat nature, and a Farscape obsession; addicted to coca-cola, semicolons, and the internet. Sojourned in the Desert Southwest, the Pacific Northwest, and the Midwest, but New England is home.

Immediate family runs from evangelical Christian to active Wiccan, raving right-wing to flaming liberal; tolerance and understanding are thus Important Components of my life. On a practical level, I prefer Macintosh to Windows, dogs to cats, standard transmission over automatic, and hardcovers rather than paperbacks. Most other stuff is open to discussion.
